you shouldnt do a water change till your tank is cycle
which could take 3-4wks depending on cycling process
then u can do a water change is that what your taking about?

Tell us what you have in your tank currently. Also your water should not be filled with ammonia. It probably has a lot of chlorine to kill the that. Are you using tap water? How big is your tank and what type of fish do you have? Do you know what your ammo, trites, and trates are? Those are the basics. Do you test frequently? Water changes after your cycle are beneficial for replentishing trace elements. You should test for all of those things.
Try and use RO water if you can. Otherwise you need to add dechlorinater and I use Cycle to help the tank mature. Some say its good and some don't.
If you have high levels of ammonia in your water source you may not want to drink it yourself.
