not quite sure which filters you're talking about. but if you're growing larvae or fish fry then you dont really need a filter due to the fact that virtually every filter will suck any tiny animal you have. when i was growing fish fry i just put them all into a 12 gallon tank with a heater, a live rock, light and airstone to keep things moving. and just perform a small water change once a month. larvae usually wont produce much waste.

you can use a mag float to magnet it near the bottom, or set a piece of LR on it to hold it down.

The filters in that tank are similar to sponge filters. They are a square plastic box that they use a bit of carbon and some filter floss in. That is the OLD style filter. Sponge filters would be great for a larva tank. I have three of them in my QT. I use them to seed bacteria. There is no hose attached. Here is a pic of my QT with them in it. It will give you an idea of what to look for.

Sure, seed it in your display or sump first. Not that larva give off much of a bio load, but it will form some natural life on it for the larva. They sell smaller ones too. If it is a hurry, then go ahead and get one to add.
