The Homerun Derby and the Stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Now if you don't know the story of Josh Hamilton he blew a 4 million dollar signing bonus on drugs. Addicted to heroin and whatever else he could get his hands on. After three years out of baseball. He finally stopped and turned his life around, got signed by the Reds I think, then eventually got traded to the rangers.
Anyway, yesterday he hit in the hr derby and while he was hitting the announcers were going on and on about how great of a story it is, how he turned around his life quit drugs and now using his story to reach kids.
Then the moment that needs to haunt Joe Morgan for the rest of his life came up.
Joe morgan said, you know what really impresses me? Not that he has done all this stuff to turn around his life. But that after 3 years of not doing anything athletic. That he can basically come back and hit major league pitching. (then he prattled on about that for another few minutes)
Not that it isn't impressive, it just was a really dumb thing to say.

I'd have to agree with Joe Morgan. Many people turn their life around everyday but it takes great talent to hit at a major league level and to be able to come back after three years at the level he is producing at is simply amazing. What is more important, definitely getting off drugs.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in complete awe of baseball, and I do think that is impressive. However in light of getting off of heroin and other drugs hitting a baseball comes secondary.

I agree with you on that .

close, well yes, because well, she is a woman and they are expected to say such things.
I mean they don't even check and see if the lid is down before they sit down. Which is going to be a thread soon...

Joe Morgan never did strike me as the sharpest knife in the drawer.
I've met the guy and he is a nice guy, but I'm getting a little tired of the hallowed ground he seems to walk on at ESPN, he is starting to Bob Costas stuff. Where sounds like he is self-imporant.

but the fact a guy can have 3 years of 0 athletics and play pro-baseball just shows how easy it is to be pro. unlike real mens sports like football and lacrosse.

That was possibly the stupidest thing I've heard all day.
But lets put this in perspective.
I know nothing about lacrosse other than it is the new fad like soccer was 10 years ago. However lets look at player development between football and baseball. Typically a 1st round pro football player will be able to contribute directly out of a D1 college.
However in a 1st round baseball player out of a d1 college is destined to the minor leagues barring rare exceptions like griffy.

As far a Josh. He is from Raleigh. He spoke here in town and a group of homelss people I know went to check it out. Regardless of what you think, I saw what an impact he had on some people down on their luck. Two of which are out of the bush, working and sober. His faith is his biggest story of the turn around. Great story. Josh is so afraid of the temptations out there and his past, that he has a full time assistant that manages ALL of his money. He carries no more than $20 at any one time. Does not have an ATM card ect.... Google his testimony. Not many stories like his any more in the pro arena.

I hate jumping onto threads, but I heard 'Hall-of-Famer' Joe Morgan make that comment, and wanted to smack him. Ok, a couple of points to add:
1. Joe Morgan is an idiot. There is nothing more disappointing than finding out your team is on Sunday Night Baseball, and having to listen to him blabber for three hours. If it weren't for the radio being on a thirty second delay thanks to Imus, I'd mute the TV and listen there.
2. The bombs Hamilton was hitting could render anyone stupid. I was in the bleachers Sunday to watch the prospects play, and some of the places he hit balls to were absolutely ridiculous.
3. Snopes has changed the way my family/friends use the Internet. I have cut down my 'chain mail' by 2/3 by repeatedly debunking the chain emails. Now I only get the one's that are at least partially true on Snopes.
4. Good hijack, and even better hijack of the hijack. Ruaround, I salute you
