the long tentacle anemone

i have never had a anemone before so i got one and it was doing ok the first day or so and now it gets real small and turns dark brown and then it will look ok and then small and ugly whats going on

I am certainly not the expert - but i believe what you are referring to sound like what mine does. Every 4 or 5 days it will shrink up - I think they do some sort of water exchange or something - but after a day or so it will be back to normal.

What is it? you said long tentacle is it a condy? My condy will be so big and have a long stalk and take up the space of a small plate, long whitish tentacle and purple tips, then in the morning sometimes I can't even hardly find it, it shrinks up turns orange and looks like a silver dollar size blob of orange jello, sometimes with dark purple strings hanging out it. Sometimes I think it's the most entertaining thing in my tank and I love to feed it and watch it pull food to it's mouth,(feed only when tentacle are out) I have no idea how that thing gets so big and so small but it is healthy and normal. sorry if this is a little long but if that's what you have it's normal IMO.

True anemones do wierd things sometimes.. at the lfs where i work we have some long tentacled anemones that are every bit of 16 in. in diameter when in full spread but every now and then they just aren't up to being all open and look like they are the size a a half dollar.
It's a scary thing for a new aquarist or one who has never had an anemone(besides aiptasia)to get a new one because they hear how finicky they are. make sure he has plenty of of good light and he get's fed.. other then that i don't know what else to tell you maybe someone else can help more..hope everything works out ok..
