This is my 5th tank. Set it up and put fish in it in 3 days. Looks ok so far.
My g/f is always making fun of the random pictures people put on here so she took like 50 gay ones to make fun of me. Here we go...

Stereotypical adding water picture

My bio "balls"

When the salt dissolves there is a inversion layer where it is super saturated and looks like oil and water mixing. The picture doesn't do any justice but its really cool.

Day 3, I added 3 damsels and some live rock. damn its expensive. I have lots of cool hitchhikers tho, some chits, feather dusters, microscopic shrimp, and a really cool crab bit he is so small I cant find him.

and.......why don't you like the day you put damsels in your tank? Their like 4 dollars and look pretty cool.

They were fine at first until they got evil and killed my sixline the day after I put him in, bullied my LMB to death after about 2 months of abuse, and it's practically IMPOSSIBLE to get them out once they're in. I guess I just aquascaped too well... too many caves.

Here are some updates, I'm going to get some more rock in a few days.
It's hard to take pictures that show the true lighting without the flash messing it up.

We are pretty set on a frog-fish, So that could solve the problem of catching the damsels. I used to catch sargassum fish in seaweed as a kid so I'm getting one for sentimental value.

In that case, the damsels were a wise choice. They have no place in my peaceful reef community tank, but in an aggressive FOWLR, they are colorful fish that can hold their own. They might become a snack for the sargassum angler, but they're cheaply replaced.

That gets under my skin. Why would you do that to a fish?

I'm not saying that they were bought to be eaten. If you read before, I said they can hold their own in that type of tank. IF, in fact, they do become food to the angler then it's not a huge loss. It's still not a good thing, but it's not devastating. I would never feed live fish to a predator because it increases their aggressiveness, and why would you buy a live fish to kill when you can just get silversides or something else to feed it?

OK, first off, I bought the damsels as tester fish. So it wouldn't be devastating if I were to lose one.
As for it being cruel that one fish eats another, Welcome to nature. Be mad at every carnivore for surviving.

Test fish is the problem, not the fact that one fish eats another. It's pointless to buy a live fish to feed another fish and I realize that's not what you're doing. Test fish is just another way of saying, "I'm too impatient to do it the right way."

well, I did it the right way, and the damsels are thriving. Now that I have reassurance, I have no problem buying a more expensive fish.

In the old days the way you were taught to set up a tank was with a couple of hardy fish. As live rock has become more and more the norm it has changed to the thought of how cruel it is to use fish in a tank that is getting sometimes deadly levels of ammonia. The Damsels can and do survive. Is it cruel well I feel that is up to your own moral values and what value you place on life. In 1975 I cycled my tank with damsels. In 2007 I cycled with live rock. I would not use fish again but that is my own value.

Anyway, the whole point of this was to have a stereotypical tank diary. So now that the random arguing is out of the way I can finish it with a detailed "paint" schematic to show the setup.

you know there are test KITS available so you dont have to put the fish through the cycle. i imagine that's a pretty wretched way to die. i'm not so sure about it being cruel to use them as feeders. no matter what, something has to die when you feed carnivorous fish. even if its not fish, there's plenty of live critters that are processed into frozen foods. personally i wouldnt do it, but it's my take on things. i'm taking that after 4 other tanks you have the proper test kits, refractomer, buffers, etc? why not just use those instead of fish?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ahahahhahahahaahhaah. the fish thats black and white on the right side looks pretty mean with those huge teeth. sheesh calm down people he put the damsels in after he tested the water being ok... lotta people do that i did it also was told by this forum to pop in some TESTER fish hardy damsels cheap and hardy! but later removed him he was a bulllieeeee. ahhahahahahaha i just seen the fire lmao
