Exactly. If its feeding, active, and showing no signs of damage(disease, sunken stomach, blemishes) it will probably do just fine.

1journeyman... Yes I have had 3 tangs over the past 5 years that have all died and there was something wrong... me
Initially when I got my first powder blue 5 years ago it was my first tank and I never checked my water, never did water changes and would buy any fish that I liked.... :scared: suprsingly the pb lasted 3 months. Within the last 2 months I bought a powder brown that was sick initially and I did not buy a good specimen and trusted the LFS to tell me it was natural for his belly to be white despite all of the pictures I had seen about them and he died 2 days later. 3 weeks ago I bought a beautiful powder blue that was 5" eating very well, acclimated him for 3 hours ... but I did not qt, put him in my tank and he got ich within 12 hours... despite, a UV, checking my water daily, doing hypo, feeding nori (soaked with garlic and vitamins) he died 3 weeks later.
So I started this thread just to see what everyones opinion was. Tangs are my favorite fish by far and I would like to get another one, but don't want to see another fish die if it can be prevented and want to see what peoples experience is with the most hardy. I made the list at the top, mainly from what I have read.
It is cool to hear some people have had such good experiences with Hippo's especially growing from such a small size.
The 2 tangs I would like in my 90 a Red Sea Dej. Sailfin and a Acanthurus japonicus, but we will see. I think the next tang I will try will be the sailfin in a month or two, I don't think I will have enough room for two tangs unfortunately.

I got a Kole for Christmas and besides it being shy for the 1st week it seems to have came to rest and does just fine so I could agree with everything that I have read that Kole's are hardy...Dont know from exp yet...
(Not to get off topic what part of AK are you in?)

Niger Bang... I am from Anchorage. It snowed about 13 feet here during december. Back to the discussion of tangs!!!
I really like the look of Kole's... haven't watched them enough to see if they have much personality though! Good to hear that he is doing well and hopefully hardy!
