I don't intend to bring a debate to this thread - but here's my opinion - I would have to say I disagree with you there. Most of the best reef tanks I've seen all run UV 24/7. I have yet to see a reefer say that they've added one and saw negative effects. I see a lot of the opposite. I run UV and love it from day one. In fact, many of the SPS and softie reef tanks featured in "Ultimate Marine Aquariums" by Paletta also run UV 24/7.

Cheap heaters - I once lost a 10 gallon nano to a stuck Hagen heater and had a no-name submersible (that I picked up from Petsmart) blow up in the sump of another system I used to have set up (I posted a picture of the results on here a year or so ago).
Pay the money up front for a quality heater and a seperate temperature controller to act as a layer of defense in case of a heater malfunction.
