the oyster shells that i bought have silica

the oyster shells that i bought have silica is this bad? Can i still use it or will it hurt my tank later down the road? Somebody help please :(

Silicates= Diatom food=bad
Silica = Glass= not bad (they make tanks out of the stuff)
Silicone=sealant=good for holding glass tanks together...

ok then so silica is ok to have in the oyster shells? All it is is sand?

Well, not quite. Sand is made of silica, glass is made of sand (sort of) and....you get the point.
The oyster shells just are made up of the same mineral that sand is. Silica is one of the more abundant minerals on the planet and one of the most abundant in the ocean so it makes sense that many creatures use it.

OH ok. I see :) I am going to post some pics of the DIY LR i did today.....but i broke off one of the legs :( uh oh.

Hey shiby, thanks a bunch for the link. It was very informational :yes: I posted a couple pics of the DIYLR that i finished a couple days ago. I am going to pic up some more sand later today. I will probably post some pics next week of the next batch.

not a problem!

I just put some of my new LR in my tank right now.... it looks great.. i love the look of diy LR ... i did notice tho i like my rock with oyster shells with absolutely no sand used because the outter oystershells are very white and can be seen ... i can't w8 to get coralline growing on it all!!
sorry no pics i don't have a digi cam yet.

too bad about no digi cam. I'd love to see pics of them. I have not been able to see anyone's finished DIYLR in there tank b/c pics were all deleted during the update. Oh well. I will have to be a little more diligent to find some pics on here....when i get the time :)

I have ahuge batch curing right now. I am scheduled to change water tomorrow. I'll take and post some pics then!
