well, this is the week.. the freshwater guys are going back the lfs, the tank is a-comin down and going back up this weekend.
(40 stretch hex).

i have 65lbs of sand, im going to go with about 40 lbs of lr, and enroute is a turbo twist 6x uv. i keep reading over and over (and over and over) about proten skimmers. what do they really do? is it something that can be done without, or is it really best to use one? :notsure:

1st good luck with your new Addiction!!!

you can go with out a skimmer but that means more maintance for you!
skimmers take out all the Disolved waste in the Water column.

my first time around with salt water, i was doing great.
i had a 29 g eclipse with a perc, short horn cowfish, coral beauty, firefish, and clean up crew.
life was beautiful till the long nose butterfly got in there. now i have a bigger tank, more knowledge (thus more questions), and i was hoping i could go without one ($ and space issue)
i was planning on doing my normal 5g/week water change (as i do now) and loading up on lr, does that change anything?

you can have a successful tank without a skimmer but it's more work, more testing, more adjustment. there are some really nice tanks out there that do not have skimmers. it's your choice.
