Is there anything I can do to control the color of the coraline that grows on my LR? it seems that the dark maroon is overtaking my bright purples and white patches. or is this something that I really cant control?

I believe its a matter of calcium 350-480ppm, alkalinity(3-5me/l) and good lighting. The white coraline is dead, Im sure.

Have you changed your lighting? Briter lighting will cause some coraline algae die off but it will grow back.

Just passing on some info that a fellow customer at LFS showed me. Pull out a piece and compare the surface of each type. Also, try and scratch some off. If it breaks off in sheets/patches, it's probably not coraline. Is this true? I've got the a bit of it in my tank.

no, it's coralline. i had cyano in my smaller tank, but its pretty easy to tell the difference. I think I'll test my alk and boost my calcium a little.
burnspy, are you sure there isnt a white coraline? i had it on the tips of my LR since I got it and it came on some aquacultured Marshall Island LR. the branch tips were a beautiful bright white. I was hoping to keep it. oh well.
thanks for the info.

Im not 100% sure, but I know when I wash my pumps and filters that are almost completely purple, a lot of the coralinhe dies off and becomes white until it gets covered again.

interesting. maybe that was the case, but it sure looked awesome (should have taken pics).
In any case, im concerned now that my problem is worse than calcium. its a pretty young tank, only 5 mos old. and the maroon patches I thought was coraline will scrape off with my fingernail in a couple spots and slightly show the rock underneath. It looks JUST like coraline, and not slimy or hair like. If it is Cyanobacteria, it's not like any ive seen at my LFS or in my other tank. their infection was on the cc and was hair like. nothing from that tank was introduced, and my lighting is PC-144W. you think it is the case?
im doing a water change now just so I can sleep tonite. im worried

My reef is 8 months old and my coraline has been thriving. I also have many patches of dark maroon as well as the usual purple, pink, green etc. I also believe it is coraline. I have just about beat a fight with red slime and this is certainly coraline. I have 225W VHO on a 37gal. I hope it is not anything bad.

The reds and dark maroons of coraline algae usually inhabit the dimmer portions of the reef (caves, crevices).
