This same situation drove me crazy for a while
.
I ended up buying a couple coralife digital thermometers @ $8 each. When they arrived I wanted to test them and had no idea what to use as a reference to see how accurate.
.
I figured that the average human body temp was 98.6 so I put all the temp probes in my mouth ( driving home from work and had 4 cables hanging from my mouth, LOL) all the readings were 98.6 to 98.8, I figured they were acceptable and accurate readings using an average. Now I use those thermometers as the standards for all my tanks. My chiller readings are always off by about +2 and I never, ever use the readings from the heaters.

(sorry to get off topic) Boxers are the best! I have 5 right now, 2 of which are pups that the new owner is picking up today (just had a littler of 9) I have a male German reverse brindle, a female brindle and fawn female....We are almost a boxer dominated company, my business partner has 5 boxers, employees have boxers....
.
So sorry to hear about the pup, thats hard......
.
My next boxer will be a black boxer from kenonboxers.com (I think the site is working)Ken has been selective breeding boxers and has almost perfected a black boxer, really incredible looking pups. Ken also has most of the top ranked boxers in the US and Canada. You can line up 100 boxers and I pick out which ones are Ken Lau boxers.

Buy yourself a cheap meat thermometer from the grocery store for about $10-12, but make sure it is able to be calibrated and check your thermometers every once and a while. Well we all know boiling water is 212 degrees and water loaded with ice while stirring should be 32 degrees. Check both of those point, but the 32 is closer to your actual reading temp so that one is more important. If your reading is off use the calibration

[hr]
and adjust the temp. Also my hands are in all of my tanks constantly and I can tell if the water temp has raised about 1-2 degrees.
