thin plastic looking build up on surface

I have this thin layer on the surface of my tank and when distrubed it broke up and formed thin plastic looking pieces that floated around in my tank. I had surface build up before, but never like this where it actually formed into a substance when broken up.
Any ideas????

Probably just protein on the surface of the water. More surface agitation and protein skimming should cure that.

I point my returns towards the surface and keep some of my power heads pointed upwards to reduce this. You need to fix it as it doesnt allow for proper gas exchange.

one benefit of having a sump is that the overflow constantly takes water in, preventing this from happening. and +1 on the powerhead thing
