for me, someone has to be killed in the first chapter...try Dean Knootz!
I like John Grishm (sp), currently I'm reading all of Steven White's books (at least those dealing with Alan, any other my mom didn't have).
Never heard of most of the other authors....

Dean Koontz is a template writer...he never writes anything outside his comfort zone which is why most of his books are so similar. Grisham is an amazing law oriented storyteller but you can only read so many before they seem formulaic. However I still think the Rainmaker is his best book. The Client was excellent as well. Another author who fits in this category is Tom Clancy. All are amazing writers and they stick with the foremost rule of the trade which is : Write what you know. BUT as said before, they all seem so formulaic and templated. If you mix the authors up it can give you months of fantastic reading. Just dont bother with Clancy's "Red Rabbit". Snooze fest!
If you want an author who can mix it up and suprise you everytime....read Stephen King and his penname (Richard Bachman) books.

Stephen King is way, way to boring for me. I've tried to read many of his books and failed, they drag on and on. The movies are much better. I got to the very end of Red Matter (something like that) when I just got sick of it draging, threw the book across the room and returned it to the library. luckly, I never wasted any money on his books. Wasn't able to read Needful Things or Carrie.

Yep, that's true...got a girl, guy and most likely a dog, that dog may have a tracking device for an evil witch or may be able to read/write ect. Girl in trouble will undoubtaly fall in love with guy/hero/one who saves her, although he'll be a bad type of guy(on the surface...) Still love him! Read most more than once or twice...Lightning is my fave, girl, guy, kid...no dog...
but you can only read so many before they seem formulaic
I haven't read all of them yet, and I've haven't read any (other than The Client more than once).
