Think you have algae problems!!!

I would want to at least TRY to get things sorted out without going as drastic as starting over. I'm sure NM is aware that it may come to that, but I don't blame him for trying something less drastic first.

I'm sure your up to the challenge. With a tank looking that bad, you should get some noticable progress pretty quickly. Quick question though you said the lights are on for 4hr a day. Does that mean theres something living in there? And of course your going skimmerless, right?

Between the two tanks there is a few snails(turbos) and a single pale looking tomato clown. Both systems have americle wet/drys with nasty bio-balls. Each has a cheap americle skimmer...one is shut down and the other sort of works. She is willing to replace the lights and take steps to improve filtration and increase circulation. She visited here last night and said..."do whatever it takes to make mine look like yours!!!"...I don't think she is willing to spend that type of cash any time soon but Iam confident that I can referse her current trend. I am hopeful that I can avoid totally tearing them apart.....for now I plan on bi-weekly wter changes...stabalise the water chemistry...replace the lights...improve the circulation...improve the ability of her current filtration....in a few months I'm sure both will be much improved. Then after they are up and running I can back off and she can resume regular upkeep.

take out all the LR and scrub it. That'll be a good start. At least there's not too much coral. Even if there was, it would never see the light of day, or the PCs, or MHs . . .

rbmount,
Get a weedwhacker and a good ground, and go at it! Someone would be proud for sure!
good one...

NM- I agree with a lot of the posts, I think you best bet is to kill the lights for a week, take each rock out, scrub it down then put it back in. Trying to resolve all that algae in the tank, seems almost impossible, since you are not dealing with corals (or did I miss some corals) you can do this and her tanks would look better overnight.
I have done the lights off and scrub down before and it makes all the difference in the world. Of course you have to fix all the other problems too, but taking those rocks out and scrubbing them would help tremendously.

I have seen these 2 tanks in the past....She had them up for sale a while back. I believe she said that she had an eel, clown and yellow tang in the 120 and all I could make out in the 55 was a cardinal. If its the same tanks Im thinking of (right next to the softball fields). Maintanace on the 120 is gonna be rough because there wasn't alot of room to work and her stand was really tall but I have read your previous posts and think you'll have it looking good in no time. I too would like to start a reef...let me know the next time you'll be at Al's if you don't mind answering a couple of newbie questions.

Now I'm being abit selfish NM, but what a great opportunity to already have some wonderful setup fuges. Bob would be jealous. Anyway, this will be interesting to follow, please figure out a way to keep us updated without having to follow this one thread. This will certainly be a "work in progress". Make this a sticky in the other forums...."What not to do"..or...."How to deal with "Up the out Canal hair algea"......just a thought.....he-he:jumping:

HOLY SMOKES - I bought some LR for a local reefer for my 140 and he had hair algea pretty bad .... but he must have plucked most of it since I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed. I ended up putting it in a rubbermaid, killing hte lights for a month - scrubbing it - and then selling it. The few pieces I have in my 29 still break out with it..... I will be giving those hte "dark" treatement as well once I get moved. I would highly suggest NO LIGHTS at all - if she has nothing but snails then they should be fine. I'd also get that clown out and get her some store credit to use @ a later date!
