everyone down plays the risk to some degree. but here is the deal they are venomous and can hurt you noe if thats going to bother you doing regular tank maintence and not wanting to get hurt by it my suggestion is not to get it.
remember the saying if you think your going to break you probably will. well if every time you put your hand in the tank you think your going to get stung you will eventual get stung from being to careful so to speak.
IMHO

Since I got stung a few years ago, every time I bump my hand on something, I jerk like I'm touching a hot stove--I'm surprised my elbow hasn't crashed into the lighting yet. So, I have one of my kids watch my lion whenever I'm in there; I'm sure never going to go without one!

I strongly strongly disagree.
I am allergic to wasps, but not to bees. They are very different venoms. I am mildly allergic to fire ants...which are closely related to wasps (more so than bees).
I would not hesitate to get a lion, as nearly all lionfish stings are due to human error - not aggression on the part of the lion. This makes it easy to prevent, IMO.
But it takes a lot of attention to detail and what you are doing. If you are a "scrub algae while turned toward the TV" type, then I would avoid them.

Yeah; the labeling of lions as "aggressive" fish is a giant myth; they are predators, but their slow movement and flowing fins often make them a target for many fish. They will seldom bother anything that can't be swallowed whole, and they can swallow a much bigger fish than many people expect.

Thank you FMarini for clearing this up, "Lionfish venom is very different than bee or wasp venom. The pain is similar, only because your bodys reaction to either is similar. Lionfish venom is a composed of mainly acetylcholine and a few dozen proteins, its role is too overwhelm the closest nerves, and immediately cause an intense reaction." that is what I thought (they are different), I have tried looking into this over the past few years and it hard to find any good info about it. Good to see you here Frank......
