Your problem isn't with the bottom of the pipe like most people with built in overflows. You basically have water swirling in from the top. Create a muffler assembly. Takes 2 pieces of PVC say 1/2 pipe and a 1.5 inch cap. Cut 2 squares in the top of the pipe and insert into the overflow hole. Attach the cap to the top of the pipe with pvc glue or krazy glue. Now drill a 1/4 inch hole in the center of the cap and insert a airline tube till its just below the squares that you cut in the PVC pipe.
This bascially forces all the sound back into the water where it is muffled. And you need the airline tube otherwise the water wont flow.

I have a built in overflow, so perhaps the two holes wont work to well with me.
Although, now I am a little confused as to what you are saying above. Do you have any pictures??

Yea, his design still makes a little more noise than the design with the airline. I was using him as a reference to how it should be made in general.

Crap, I was fine until I read all this. Thank guys and gals. Thanks a lot.

I wonder if keeping lizards would have been a better choice or maybe poisonous snakes?????

Here you go. Give it a try youll be in love with your tank. The only noise mine makes is a slight trickle.

hmmm....nvr seen this before but in my experimenting have done something similiar....but I have a question are putting these holes in the drain line and using some type of stand pipe like a durso or stockman?
I'm using a "Hofer Gurgle Buster" and with fine tuning i would say that I'm not much louder than a trickle but I'm wonder if these two holes might make it even quiter?

Well, my tank is drilled for the overflow, so I don't have to worry about losing syphon. I don't know why I'm so paranoid... Being a renter on a 3rd floor maybe?
lol, dude, just wait till it really happens. I had a 180 gallon on the third floor start to drip. It sucked.
As for the holes. I saw an interesting thing the other day. This dude, and an oceanic aquarium. And he used the intake and return holes for an intake. He just throttled the bigger one back, so any extra went down the formerly return drain. But it trickled slow enough where it was completely silent. It was brilliant.

Where did it drip from?

I don't think I fully understand what you're describing here.
