This is a fresh water ?

I have had a Freshwater tank setup for about six years and some how today I found a Snail on the Glass. How is it possible to get a snail with out adding a snail? Could it be a saltwater snail in my freshwater tank????? I did use the same brush once from my saltwater tank on my freshwater tank. I have no other explanation.
Anyone have any suggestions.

I know there are freshwater snails. I don't know what they look like or how you might encounter some though. I've heard fresh snails are pests.
What I do know though, is that it's unlikely to be a saltwater snail.
Not much help am I?

there are several different species that can come in on plants or in the water of tanks that are infected with them. are they real small conical shaped shells

No this one is fairly large it's about 1 " big. I have not added any plants or fish for about 5 months now.
All I do know is I have to get rid of it or the whole tanks will be filled with them.

What did you put in yuour tank last....plants? Used gravel? It had to come from somewhere, and I do not even think it could be a saltwater variety living in there, but stranger things happen I am sure. Depends on what kind it is (description would help immensely) weather is FW or SW and what kind it actually is....The list of good freshwater snails is relativley short.

The last thing I added was an Plecostomus from walmart about 4 months ago, but there was no gravel or anything that was in the bag with the fish.
It looks like an Olive Nerita Snail, If that helps.

That's a big damn snail, put some doc wellfish's salt in there.
I don't know what that'd do to the snail but I know land snails don't like salt much.

Ya the sad part is today is the first day that I saw him and I look at my tank often too, so I don't know where it has been hiding either.

I have hundreds of snails in my African cichlid tank and I've never added any on purpose. I think they can be very small and when the lfs grabs the fish, they may get a couple snails by accident. either that or the snails grow from the fish waste. either way, I've got hundreds. I think loaches will handle the problem, if you consider it a problem.

I had a major infestation of FW snails in my old tank. I was literally taking out dozens every week.

Well I do have an big time algae problem right now, so I think I will let him stay for now and if it gets to bad I will just start throwing them into my reef tank for my hermit crabs to use :)

If you have a FW snail problem, take a piec eof zuchinni squash and slice it up into slices andfloat a few in the aquarium. Place them in the aquarium about a half hour before lights out, and the next morning just net the floating slices and rinse off under running water. They will be loaded with snails. Then just place in fridge until the next night and repeat. You can remove a heap of snails with slices of zuchinni squash. Clown loaches also love snails.
That snail sort of looks like the typical FW Ramshorn snail, which do not normally populate and over run an aquarium like the smaller pond or marble snails do. I would let it be.

it doesnt have to be a bad thing i mean one time i keep a snail for 3 hours in a plastic sandwich bag then put it in my tank
p.s. its fun when you have a sand bottom they leave a cool trail
