I got up at 715am only to step onto wet carpet in the living room  ... my protien skimmer had stopped suckin in air and overflowed onto the carpet... only lost 2gal and all coral still under water so didnt lose anything (good thing i got up at 7 though)... i need to drill the skimmer and run a line to a milk jug but my question is: does anyone have a problem with the air in line on the skimmer getting clogged with salt??? how do i stop it??? i have a coral life 6500 (i think)... it plugges into wall it is not driven by an air pump...

one thing you can do is make the line longer and move it some where it wont be near the salt. And just add it to part of your weekly maint.

This is why I prefer in sump skimmers...that way if they overflow it flows right back into the sump.

i have a 20gal tank w/o a sump... i will add it to my weekly maint., making the line longer wont help because the part that is clogging up in the end that connects to the intake which is in the water... i guessing the airline being clogged is what caused it... thanks for the help...

there wasnt any skimmate in the cup, cleaned it the night before thankfully and it just filled with water since the air supply was shut off...

All you have to do is drill a small hole in the top of the collection and run the air line to it, this will keep it from drying out, you still may have to clean it every now and then. This may have helped a little on your mess to. The tube would have sucked up some of the water, just recirculating it, should have kept some off the floor.

You could try and one up that and drill you a 3/8" drain in your skimmer cup so if it overflows it will drain back in to your tank or a container.

Yes, I do that also, the guy was all ready talking about doing that, I was telling him how to keep the venturi air line from getting clogged with salt creep. Thanks.... I'll try and post pics later
