Q-Tip sponge. Harmless filter feeders.
Once the nutrients that they're feeding off of disappears, so will they.
I have a lot of them in my sump. Very beneficial.

Probably feeding from the die off from the new rock.
Do you have any livestock in tank yet?

what do you mean with livestock?
Fish, Invertebrates, anything that you would have to feed food to. The sponges are feeding on the fish waste and dissolved matter from the fish food.

Are you that dead set on getting rid of beneficial sponges? They aren't hurting anything....just helping your tank.
I don't know of anything that would kill them off and not kill something else in your tank. Other than a tweezers.

sorry to hi-jack
i have the same problem, but you got way better pics than i could
they were all gone when i had a CB but after it passed it came right back so now i have a bi-color (angel) and he has not done the same awesome job of keeping them trimed, and my tank is infested and even got into every nook and crany of skimmer and was messing with the function of the skimmer. so has been removed. now i have a redicoulous number of them on my rock, and what looks like calcium deposits/white spots on my tank glass. should i scrape them off?

The white spots on your tank glass is bleached coraline.
I have had Q-tip sponges all over my tank for about 3 months now. Just recently I've noticed that most have gone away. What ever nutrient they feed off of must be used up in my tank because they are going away.
