This weeks update on the "Wife's Monster".. If it keeps growing at this rate I will need another tank!! The overhead shot shows how big his "mouths" are becoming!!! (one of I think now nine mouths with the power-heads turned off.)......Warren

The "Monster" gets fairly good light, but not excessive . 4x96 watts 12 hours a day , about 23 inches down from the lights. Moderate but steady flow. Reversed flow direction daily.
Food is a combination of smashed scallop, shrimp, krill, and touch phytoplankton, in a chunky paste fed to different "Mouths" a couple times a week from a blaster.
Couple of weeks back I thought he was in "TROUBLE"!!!
The where 2 days he didn't open all the way......... Till I figured out he was just growing new "mouth" areas......... Now he is bigger than ever, well over a foot across and up to about 8 or 9 inch high tentacles.
Does it "sorta" like a Mushroom does. Develops a crease the then grows new tentacles and a newer section shows up from the fold......Warren

Beautiful!
BIG, Are your 4 x 96's power compacts?
Does anyone know how this would do under 4 x 110 VHO's over a 120 gal?
My local LFS has one... but I am hesitant to buy it given their reputation (the coral, not the store) and also concerns over my lighting.

Some of the issues with the "Elegance" may this days be related to collection methods. When I started this adventure a while back, the only coral book I had was from the mid 90's ("The Captive Reef") Back then this coral was considered very hardy....... So what has changed????? Now the wife thinks we need a new Library and I should buy stock in Amazon.com!
Me being one of those "Obsessive Compulsive types" The wife says I love being one!!!! I have since read just about everything I can find about this fellow.... If you look at the SWF.Com example it is one of the darker or more purple type with seems to be from deeper waters. One thing I quickly learned in this area is that means, difficult to keep alive!
Secondly Look for the "Conical" base on the coral that is very clean and free of any types of growth. also NOT a large broken off base. Cleaner cone bases tends to be one of the keys (from the sickly examples I see in the LFS's ) . Must have something to with how long since collection..........??? Who knows???
I am NOT an expert at this ( the Reef tank is just my newest adventure) but 30 plus years of keeping fish. (I still have "Metaframe tanks with slate bottoms holding water!!) I think a lot of the basic principles are just about the same. Daily checks and ultra clean water.
And yes to answer your initial question the lights seem OK with the 120 tank size, just be careful in the specimen you chose at to it's initial health. Good luck with your choice!!!!!!!!!! Warren

wow, that is super nice warren, wanted to ask also how you have been, seems like your typing has really come along since i read your first post. everything else going well, i know you had a stroke, and some health issues afterwards. Just wanted to make sure you are diong well.
p.s. the tank has really come along, wish there were some decent elegance corals around my area, you make me want to try one

Thanks for the info. The one at my local LFS is very light like yours.. which I assume is not the deep water specimen you refer to. I'll have to check out the base if I can.

one of the largest ideas to as why these are no longer considered hardy is because our tanks have become so clean and these corals are starving. now with huge oversized protein skimmers, and excessive carbon and phosban use, as well as frequent water changes, there arent enough nutrients in the water for elegance corals

Very nice big. I have had mine for close to a year. It's neon green with purple/blue tips. Great work!

Thanks, No the stroke issue still is a problem, but forced retirement and far too much time on my hands allows me to use the Forum as both a learning tool and typing therapy exercise!!!!!! Along with figuring out to copy and paste from a spell checkable program!! LOL
To the issue that "fishieness" brought up as to "The Modern Methods" of reef keeping. I think he may have a very valid point there.
The Elegance responds well when I am stirring up the substrate etc. Although my FW days make me still believe in super water quality, (Yes I use a big skimmer 100 lbs. LR and two canisters and addition power-heads and a refugium (its not in spell check is that the way it is spelled???)as my current building project.
Additional I use lots of phytoplankton and mysis shrimp in evening feedings along with weekly "Blasting" portions of my substrate releasing the traps nutriments which both may be helpful in feeding the "Monster".????......... Warren

Very beautiful coral. I would like to try one, but I am running out of room. The way yours is growing, if I had one that did that it would over take my 55 reef.
One thing about this saltwater, keeps a person very busy. Good luck with your tanks and your daily recovery.
By the way March 10th is a very good day, thats my b-day also.
