WHY ATHLETES CAN'T HAVE REGULAR JOBS...
1. Chicago Cubs outfielder Andre Dawson on being a role model:
"I wan' all dem kids to do what I do, to look up to me. I wan' all the kids to copulate me."
2. New Orleans Saint RB George Rogers when asked about the upcoming season:
"I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first."
3. And, upon hearing Joe Jacobi of the 'Skin's say:
"I'd run over my own mother to win the Super Bowl,"
Matt Millen of the Raiders said: "To win, I'd run over Joe's Mom, too."
4. Torrin Polk, University of Houston receiver, on his coach, John Jenkins:
"He treats us like men. He lets us wear earrings.."
5. Football commentator and former player Joe Theismann:
"Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."
6. Senior basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh :
"I'm going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes."
(Now that is beautiful)
7. Bill Peterson, a Florida State football coach:
"You guys line up alphabetically by height.."
And, "You guys pair up in groups of three, and then line up in a circle."
8. Boxing promoter Dan Duva on Mike Tyson going to prison:
"Why would anyone expect him to come out smarter? He went to prison for three years, not Princeton ."
9. Stu Grimson, Chicago Blackhawks left wing, explaining why he keeps a color photo of himself above his locker:
"That's so when I forget how to spell my name, I can still find my clothes."
10. Lou Duva, veteran boxing trainer, on the Spartan training regimen of heavyweight Andrew Golota:
"He's a guy who gets up at six o'clock in the morning, regardless of what time it is."
11. Chuck Nevitt , North Carolina State basketball player, explaining to Coach Jim Valvano why he appeared nervous at practice:
"My sister's expecting a baby, and I don't know if I'm going to be an uncle or an aunt."
(I wonder if his IQ ever hit room temperature in January)
12. Frank Layden , Utah Jazz president, on a former player:
"I asked him, 'Son, what is it with you? Is it ignorance or apathy?'
He said, 'Coach, I don't know and I don't care.'"
13. Shelby Metcalf, basketball coach at Texas A&M, recounting what he told a player who received four F's and one D:
"Son, looks to me like you're spending too much time on one subject."
14. In the words of NC State great Charles Shackelford:
“I can go to my left or right, I am amphibious.”
15. Amarillo High School and Oiler coach Bum Phillips when asked by Bob Costas why he takes his wife on all the road trips,
Phillips responded: "Because she is too damn ugly to kiss good-bye."

Small world. Sports quotes was a category on Jeopardy tonight. Michael Vick had a good one to add; "I have two secret weapons -- my legs, my arms and my brain."

People who put pro athletes on pedestals are the one's who need to get a life. You actually think A-Rod deserves $24 MILLION a year for throwing a ball around and hitting it with a bat every once in a while? How about the $250,000/year some of these useless pine riders who sit at the end of a bench during the basketball season get for being nothing more than glorified cheerleaders? I wish someone would pay me to stand, cheer, and wave a towel in the air for a couple of hours, then run up and down the court for the last 3 minutes of the game during "Trash Ball". All the while having the education and intelligence of a dung beetle.

As, agrubly, the premier player on the premier team in Baseball, sure. That salary seems about correct. I expect the most popular actor to make tons of money per movie. I expect the CEO's of the most successful companies to make the big bucks. This is rarefied air.

Who doesn't? Who has the potential to play a professional sport, and say "no thanks. This 9-5 office gig raking in $45k a year is where it's at..."
As for the "Pine Riders" you think they just happened to sign up anyone? These pine riders are still the sports elite players, the guys on the field/court, just happen to be slightly better. You think you can drive on Adam Morrison to the hole? These pine rider dues where paid in high school and college, where the best go on to the pro's, and the rest go on to lead 'regular' lives...

Pine Riders are still sports elite players?
Now that is a good one. Half of the 'bottom feeders' on most NBA teams barely made it out of college ball, much less can hang with the true 'eleite' players of the NBA. They are mostly just bodies that teams can fill their bench with on a pinch. I used to have season tickets with the Spurs, and they stuck players on their bench that MAYBE got a couple hours playing time the ENTIRE SEASON. We would know it was time to leave at the end of the game when they stuck these Bozo's on the court. It was either the Spurs had a commanding lead, and both teams 'cleared the bench', or they were so far behind, they threw them out there to keep their starters from getting hurt. I honestly can't even remember any of their names. I remember when Dennis Rodman played for the Spurs, he brought along his 'lacky' from Chicago. His last name started with an 'H'. We used to laugh how he would sit on the bench next to Rodman, and make sure he had a fresh towel and water. If he wasn't playing, he'd be standing up yelling and waving his 'Spirit Towel'. The coach wouldn't put him in unless he had no choice.
It's apparent you're one of these professional sport idol worshipers. Me, I could care less. If fans are stupid enough to drop their hard-earned money watching these inflated ego's entertain them, then knock yourself out.

Dude you can't suck and be on a top level (MLB, WNBA, NFL) without being the best of the best. Even if you are the worst player on the team. You're still better than the other 299 million people who live in the USA. And 7 billion in the world... Think about it, there is around 800 people playing MLB baseball at any given point of time (when they have 25 man rosters). IF you're one of those 800 out of the 7 billion people in this world, I personally would consider that an elite position even if you do ride the pine... And that is why they make the millions of dollars.

Give me a break. There are players in the NBA for the only reason they are 6'6" and can dunk a ball. Look at Manute Bol. The guy didn't even know what a basketball was until some recruiter found him over in Sudan. He was skinny as a rail, but at 7'7", the teams just stuck him under the basket and let him swat balls out of the way. I'm not saying these guys don't deserve their shot in the 'Bigs' because of their talent. I just don't agree with paying them ungodly amounts of money simply because they have a unique skill that requires little or no intelligence to do.

Sure, I would agree those are among some of the key components to a successful basketball player. 6'6" is a little short though.

Hardly. He had already played for Sudan teams for several years. He failed to enter the NBA through the draft, unlike many other European players. He played college Div-II for a season because of his poor english, before entering the NBA.
As for the Pine riders, go look at 'your own' Spurs. There isn't a guy on there that wasn't an All-American, 4 year starter in college, some Euro-league stand out, etc.

Here's the beauty of it, if everyone was so vehemently opposed, they wouldn't get their salaries. But guess what? Apparently enough still enough sports, so they can...

dude you're talking basketball. Basketball is the biggest joke of a sport since woman's basketball...
But it is really simple, a professional althete one of 800 people that can do a job that brings in billions of dollars. You should get paid...

Therein lies the problem. The American public is duped in believing they should pay whatever the profession demands in order to get their 'fix'. Only professional sports has the ability to charge fans whatever the deem necessary, and people fall in line like blind lemmings. A few years back, the Spurs started threatening to leave town if they didn't get their fancy multi-million dollar facility. So the ignorant hard-core Spurs fans bowed down to their needs, and gave them what they wanted. The only saving grace is it's the tourists that are paying for the place. They jacked the hotel and car rental tax up 5% - 8%. Look at Jerry Jones and his new JerryWorld. What's a cheap seat in that place go for, $100? Why is it so expensive? Because the whiny Football Union says pay me a minimum of $300,000/year, or I don't play. Of course Jerry isn't paying all those salaries out of his pocket. He gets it from yours. What professional sports needs is a good 2 or 3 year strike. Let the spoiled brats go without for a couple of years, and then see what they're willing to pay for.

I can be just as happy watching high school football for free. Come end of season slip the coach a couple hundred to treat the players to pizza and get a hell of a lot more appreciation than having season seats at an NFL game for fifty times the price.

True, but you might look like a pedaphile wearing the jersey of someone else's kid and offering to buy them dinner.

That would imply that suddenly American's won't pay out their nose for nosebleed seats to watch "their" team. Networks won't pay even more for the rights to televise the games (where the real money is at). And of course that won't happen any time soon. So that would leave all the rich white owners raking in even more money. Making even more money off the blacks (lets face it, there are a whole lot more black people than white people in professional sports) get screwed... (A little humor there) Because face it, jerry isn't going to cut ticket prices no matter how little he has to pay Marion Barber...
It is basic game theory. Basically those sports franchises are a monopoly in their own town. (especially with football) They have a limited number of games and limited number of seats, purposely (imo) smaller than the market demands. Thus forcing up the price of the ticket... in this case it is the corporation's fault tickets are so high, them and all their salesman comps...

That's what I'll be doing this fall. My youngest made the cheerleading squad at her school, so I'll be hittin' every game.
