Part of being successfull in this hobby is appropriate selection of animals. You indicated in another thread that the lion looked really thin. This would indicate to me that the lion was not eating at the lfs.
Perhaps the animal was in poor health? Did you see the lion eat at the lfs? How long did they have the lion before you purchased?
All questions you should ask...as well as witnessing the animals eating before purchase.
It is not unusual for lions not to eat for a few days after you place in your system. However, if the animal did not eat at the supplier and then did not eat at the lfs...you may have purchased an animal in a weakened state...not healthy enough to survive yet another transfer to a new system.

Chalk it up as a lesson learned and move on.
I have been in this hobby for over 30 years and have made ALL the mistakes....numerous times.
Always be careful what you add to your system . Do not "settle" for something unless it is eating, appears healthy, etc, etc . Ask the lfs questions as to how long they have had the animal, diet, etc.
If it does not look healthy or is not eating walk away.

Hi, your post inspired me to sign up – I am new to the site, but I have a lot of experience in the field.
I have set up a lot of fish tanks for my friends, as I am interested in getting people into the hobby. Some thing that I have been doing when I start up other people tanks is I have been giving out my old filters once they have been used for a while. Meaning I use my bacteria to establish their new tank.
I dont know how common this practice is but it has been working very well and I haven’t had a problem yet, but since you are so stressed – maybe you should give it a try.
Good luck - keep trying and work your way up. Start with damsels...

Unless you witnessed the animal eat....you cannot take their word...unless the lfs has earned your trust.
Also, if you prurchased the animal yesterday they only had him for 2-3days. Not enough time beteewn systems in my opinion. SOme fish are okay with a quick change between systems...others do not do well.

Your system probably was a non-issue if the fish was weak or unhealthy due to lack of nutrition/eating before you purchased.

Cartman...when I first emtered the hobby I was 15. My first set-up was a 29 gallon. I cycled the tank with two damsels per lfs advice. After cycling I added the following and the lfs said it was okay (they advised) :
1 Medium Queen Angel
1 Seahorse
1 Flame Hawk
1 Longnose Butterfly
1 Anemone
1 Tomato Clown
All went in the system at the same time..and all died within two weeks. That was over 30 years ago...so how's that for a mistake.
