Timer on lights and Skimmer.

My protein skimmer lateley has not been foaming up alot, im guessing this is because there is not much waste for it to skim out. When i leave the skimmer on all day and night, it makes my water level go down quite a bit. Can I just hook it up to the timer my lights are on so my water level wont go down as much, or does it need to be on constantly cleaning?

It really would be best to just leave it on all the time.
If not for anything else,for the airation that it is adding to the water...
Plus cycling it on and off is hard on the pump.This could cut the life of the pump in half as compared to just leaving it on...
