tiny filtration fiber balls?

My test kit for magnesium uses tiny little cotton balls for filtration. The cotton balls have disappeared. Is there a substitute? Can I use regular cotton ball pieces, rolled into little balls? So far I haven't found a supply for replacement "filtration fiber" balls.
I'm waaay over due for chem testing....
should I ask this on a different forum?
thanks

I have the same kind of mag test kit. I believe it's just fine to use regular ole' cotton balls. Just pack them in there tight. It just serves as a filter is all.

thanks, that was what I was thinking but since I have no idea what it would be filtering out I wasn't sure. They felt like cotton to me, anyway.

I think it causes the calcium carbonate to precipitate, then the floss collects the precipitate. But I'm not sure.
