Lets just put it this way. I use to have turbo snails. My little blue legged hermit killed and ate one of my turbo's, then took the shell and made it his own. Then today he killed and ate another one of my snails. Tiny hermy is on his way out.

As hermit crabs grow they need larger shells, its possible that your guy was just running out of room in his shell. Always keep a few extra shells for your blue legs and they wont harm a thing. I have about 20 blue legs in my 50g and other than them fighting each other for shells they are harmless.

Thanks for the response to my post. The funny thing is I have about 6 empty shells in my 75 that hermy could get in, I just think he likes eating them. I have 3 hermit crabs and monster H is the only one I am having trouble. I actually sat there at my tank and watch kill and eat my poor snails.

Well thats a bummer, My lfs that is use to be until lets just call him fruit. Told me they were the good ones to have.
Once upon a time there was a fruit, then one day as I was on my way there to my lfs, what is this? oooh nooh Mr fruit is gone. Left us with, gee setting up a sw tank is easy. " Believe me it has been every thing but easy" So then poor little fishy found mb. Thank heavens. So now poor little fishy goes along long way to get sw stuff.
Sorry I just had to let off steam

Im confused...
I used to have Blue legs in my tank.... They were way to aggressive for me. I took them out and bought some red leg reef hermits.

Im curious, kind of blue legs do you have (pic?)? There are many different varieties of hermit crabs. The kind of I have have solid blue legs, with darker spotted claws. And they are not agressive at all.
Maybe yours did get the taste of blood? Maybe your lfs put them in a tank with nothing but snails and never fed them?
I love my little blue guys, there are like 3-4 of them that are huge (size of a quarter)! I've never seen them eat anything but algea and leftover pellets. As zap said, they are cool to watch.. hours of entertainment.

i don't understand why they get such a bad rep, i've never had any problems with them. maybe you're under-feeding...

I have had them for nine months. I feed them every other day. I put a tiny piece of shrimp pellet in front of each one. I only have one that is eating snails. He is in the refugium now. He is blue, but so tiny I don't think I could get a good pic even, if I had a camera. I had shells in the tank, but it all started when he decided he wanted a snails shell, from then on he started eating my snails. The other two r fine, and only eat the pellets. beats me. apparently I am not the other one who has had problems.

you're feeding them freeze dried food? i usually feed mine krill or silversides thawed out from the freezer, they go crazy as soon as i get close to them with it they're falling all over themselves trying to reach up and grab it. it's pretty cool :D

You feed each of your hermit crabs by hand? lol, and I thought I was obsessed. :hilarious
Seriously tho, I have never had a problem with blue legs. They clean all around coral and sift sand for the most part. Id say they are about 80-90% herbivores, I dont feed them at all.
My peppermint shrimp on the other hand will ---- my LTA until it closes up if I dont feed her every day.

obsessed is the rite word. My whole family thinks I'm nuts. since Ihad surgery, and have been home for 2 months, I go to library and get plenty of ocean films, and I have my nose stuck to the tank glass all the time.
Except when my hubby gets home, then its his turn.

i wouldn't say that i feed all of my hermits by hand on a regular basis, but i do feed the larger ones from time to time.
