Tip on getting HUGE Shrooms

There is a guy that I go to college with that now works at one of my fav lfs's. This particular store always has humungous shrooms for sale. Well, yesterday he let me into the propogation area and showed me the secret.
With the shroom fully opened and still attached to the live rock, slit it in half with a brand new razor blade. The slice has to be directly down the center, with the "mouth" portion cut neatly in two.
After awhile the two halves will rejoin, and the shroom will double in size. Keep doing this and it will get progressively larger. They have a hairy mushroom in the store that measures about 8 inches across that they grew using this method. Enjoy. Let me know how it turns out.

Thanks for sharing mud. I will be slicing a couple of mine in the near future. That method makes sense to me.

Not that this has much to do with your info...
I went to a LFS here in Tampa the other day and they had a mushroom (forget the name) and it HAD to be at least 18-20 inches across.
I have a giant rhodactis and the more I feed it the bigger it becomes. It usually eats a whole silverside (if I let it). When I got it around 4 months ago it was no bigger than a decent sized ric fl mushroom (the lfs sold it to me as a ric yuma).... Now it is around 8 inches across. It would be bigger but i've decided to hold back quite a bit on feeding it. :)

what if when you cut it down the middle you dont cut the stalk in half and the other half of the shroom just floats away?

Houston, We have a problem. Ha! Ahhh, sounds you just did? In that event recapture the floating 1/2 and place it on a piece of LR as described above. It will grow there!

This is off topic, but about shrooms, I did a water change on friday night, My shrooms are looking kinda shriviled still, some of them are starting to look better , will the others recover! I raised my salt from .023 to .026 i was in a hurry to go to dinner!

You shouldn't raise specific gravity faster than 0.002 in a 24 hour period. Your shrooms will probably be fine, but things liek snails, starfish, and other salinity-sensitive critters can die.
As far as the piece of mushroom floating away... as long as it has some of the "guts" from the middle stalk on it, it should grow into another shroom. They have to have a portion of those squiggly-looking intestine-like things attached to them or they will die.

I would normally not raise it so fast, but i didn't test before i dumped it in, that's what i get for letting my gal rush me out the door! Although everything else seems to be fine saw my brittles this morning and snails are hard at work! SO with any luck i escaped this time!
