kewl! I never knew that. Jacob's other name is "Israel," b/c he fathered the leaders of the 12 tribes of Israel. Does the name "Emmanuel" signify something about Jesus' life?

I agree. I was brought up Jewish but I can still appreciate the sentiment and can still wish everyone here, no matter what their beliefs, a very safe and happy holiday season!!!

God named Jacob, Israel. Gen. 32:28 Because he '' power with God '' not be cause he went on to father the tribes, which he did do....In Matt.1:23, an angle said '' and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. '', the name is also mentioned in Is. 7:14

Perhaps the meaning of the name "Israel" depends on the school of thought through which you are taught the Old Testiment. I went to religious Jewish schools and we read the Old Testament in Hebrew. Our most trusted comentator from the 13th century tells us that G-d named Jacob Israel b/c he would father the tribes. Either answer sounds good to me.
As for the whole Emmanuel thing; thanx for the citation! I'll have to look into that, I'd never known Emmanuel was Jesus' other name - it really clarifies some of my favorite Xmas carols!

My son is in the Marines, got back from Iraq in Sept. goes back around the end of Feb. so our brave men and women in the armed forces are always in my prayers. Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to all.

Iam a retired Marine and my heart goes out to you and yours. Our church every week has a "joys and concerns" portion where we as a church voice our happy and sad things that are added to the Pastors prayer. Our government leaders and our Military is always mentioned.

My wife and I appreciate that. Our church does the same thing.
