I have a 10gal tank with eclipse hood...I am having a problem maintaining a stable temp...It is an Eclipse TL1 which has two 18in lights...My temp over a 5hour period was 75-76 degrees..I purchased a submersible heater and set it to 78...I got home today after leaving the lights on all day and the temp had spiked to 84!! There are no fish in this tank I just set it up 2 days ago...I moved some LR from my display tank and took 10gals of water...I don't think it will cycle again but I am checking the water daily....
any help would be appreciated:)

Have you tried hooking up a small fan to blow across the surface of the water? That should help defuse some of the heat from the lights.

If your temp is in the 76 range, why do you need a heater? Does the temp drop significantly after the lights go out?
Heater thermostates are not exacting and what you exp is common, especially with the lower-end heaters.

Your tank can vary almost 4 degrees and still be okay. Why do you need the heater? 76 is a perfectly acceptable temp.
