While perhaps it's arguable if there is a thing as 'too much' light, you certainly can 'shock' corals by introducing them to too much light too quickly. Much like fish need acclimated to different systems, if the difference in light is that great, say going from PC's to 250w+ mh's, the corals need acclimated to the new light. Start the corals at the very bottom of the tank and slowly work them up over time.

i know but i want to know what fixture i should get, or if metal halides is to much lighting since it will be a low tank, i dont want to buy a powerful expensive fixture for no reason.

In your dimensions provided are you saying 12" is the height?
I have read several times recommendations based on the height of your tank. i.e. stronger light for deeper tanks.
All of this of course is based on what types of corals you want to keep.
I have a 60 Gallon Cube 24" X 24" X 24" and I am using the outer orbit model 1070 with good success.
I am keeping all types of corals with this light on my cube.
