I have a modified sea clone and it works well on small tanks mine is a 55g

I've run with skimmers and without. I currently run three tanks without skimmers I use refugiums for nutrient export with more satisfactory results. And keep an old hang on for emergencies. However if you have a larg number of fish in your tank, a skimmer could be a necessity.
