Afraid I have to defer to the female experts on that one ~ and based on comments above maybe so, but most that I've talked to always say more is better

huh?! I'd always heard that was what female fish said when the size of the coral is too small. Learn something new everyday

Yeah spiderwoman is right! I mean, you can put any ol tongue in any ol ocean, with any ol motion and that doesn't mean you will have success. I mean really, anybody can change the motion.
Tongue care has to be specific to your tank. You just have to do what you know, and if you see no results, then you hafta change things up a bit.
And Scopus, you are also correct. Whether it be the tongue or the size of the coral, you cannot rely on what you think you know, or what "other" hobbiests tell you worked for them.

Very true Tizzo. Every hobbiest and environment is different. What tongue works for them, may not work for you. You can provide all the motion possible, but that may rub it the wrong way and there is no success.

It is important to know the kind of tongue. While some prefer it slightly cooler others respond better with the elevated temp.

Well, that is what they do. Being that the clam is tilted toward it, I don't think the clam feels threatened by the size of the coral.

Course it could be the clam advancing toward the tongue.

I think a clam can recognize a nice tongue when they see it and can aggressively propel themselves toward it. But we can't forget the question of origin, Joe. What to do with it.

Excellent observation on the position of the clam but could it be a ploy to entice the tip of the tongue with in range and then snap shut

Joe, you are not new to this hobby. You ought to know what to do with it by now.

What you might want to try is switch their positions. That may stimulate them to try different approach. Kind of like you rearrange the LR, little role play. Let the clam be the tongue and the tongue be the clam. You never know what ends up happening.

Yes I understand. Position being an important factor to consider, along those lines the clam placed on rock above the tongue may have a different effect than the tongue placed above the clam

Whoa whoa! Stop everything! We're already talking about switching things up based on what "might" happen!? It still appears to me, that they are getting comfy with each other, and you all are suggesting rearranging the tank? That's absurd!
We have a tongue, and we have a clam and they look quite cozy right now. To mess up the atmosphere might stress out the situation and your gonna hafta start all over.
Joe, just leave things be. If that clam snaps shut on the tongue that that simply means the tongue moved in to fast. Maybe just back him up every now and again, and ya know, you can let him roam around the shell and make sure the coral is aware of it's presence.
It will snap shut if all of a sudden some unexpected presence invades its space.
Just give it time.
