I know for a DSB to work it has to be 'at least' 4-5", but can it be too deep also. I'm not talking about like 20", but something like 6-7". Is that too deep? T4AH
In your profile, it says your tank is 75 gallons, i would say a DDSB(deep deep sand bed) is not in your case. I would say 2-3-4-5 inches would be a good dsb, but IMO, half a foot for a 75? why would you want a 6-7 inch dsb anyway? Im not 100% on this answer, so just to make sure, ask someone else.
Fron what I have read, not what I have tried, you need at least the 4-5" as you mention. The deepest that I have seen mentioned is 8". If you want 6-7, I am sure that would be fine. It may perform a little better. I set mine up with 5". So far it has done well.
there really isnt any benies from having a deeper than 4 to 6 inch DSB. it cant be too deep, but it just isnt benificial. a little more spendy is all...
As I was planning and developing my DSB I saw in several instances where experiencied reef keepers with much larger systems than mine were having increased success with DSB's of closer to 6"...this was the path I took. My DSB in the display averages 6"-7"...more in places ...less where the tomato clown re-arranges. To date it has been very effective in my system.Everything I've seen indicates the acceptable range is from 4"-6"...less & you'd probably not gain the added benefits of a deep sand bed. Anything over 6"-7" and you'd probably not gain much in the way of additional benefits.Be sure to have as much diversity as possible in the sand bed to help it along and enjoy the filtering benefits that a well set-up & maintained DSB provides.
I've come to the conclussion that the foundation for a stable reef is a functioning DSB/plenty of top quality LR/and a refugium-sump that has the ability to comsume/export excess nutrients.
Thanks for the help. I came home from work, and was looking for this thread, and couldn't find it. Then, I was going to go the FD, and was scrolling down to the pull-down chart, and it caught my eye. Thanks again.
dsb are most beneficial between 4 and 6 inches, under 4 and you do loose some benefits, and then again ove r6 you are just wasting space, no it cant be too deep but it can take away from the tank, there really is no additional benefit from going over 6 at all
