I know this is probably a dumb question, but what the hell. Can a tank have too many pods in it?
I have a 37 gallon reef tank with over 20 lbs. of live rock. This is an established system over 2 years old. It's current population is 2 Skunk Clowns, 1 Striped Damsel, 1 Yellow Gorgonian, 1 Ricordia Mushroom, 1 Umbrella Mushroom, 12 Hermits and 12 Snails.
So the tank is literally crawling with pods as they apparently have no predators in the tank. Is this a problem? The only problem I can imagine is that they are perhaps competing with some of the other animals for food and resources. On the other hand I am not sure if they are not provding some other benefit to the system, such as waste management. They sure grab up any extra food that they find.
I have considered getting a fish like a Mandarin or a Blenny that would help keep the population in check. The irony is that when I started this hobby a few years back I had a Mandarin starve because there was no pods in the tank. I don't want to go through that again. I had a Six-Line Wrasse for a couple of years, was he eating pods? I could never tell.
Any thoughts on this?
