Too much coraline

I have had my 90 gallon tank for a year and most of my live rock is completely encrusted with coraline algae. My question is this, is live rock less effected when its encrusted with coraline?
And why is it of all the rock Ive seen in LFS's, none are encrusted as heavily as the rock I now have in my tank?

I would say that that the rock is just as effective because there should not be any coraline on the underside of the rock. Did you use Purple Up? I have heard of situations where people use this stuff to encourage coraline and it takes over the tank

Don't listen to Joe, he's crazy!
I hate it, I also have an acrylic tank which makes it damn near impossible to get off.

monitor ur calcium and phosphate level. if u keep ur calcium near 400-450 and phosphate low, eventually coraline algae will grow.

while my tank is new my coraline has really taken off. I can see it everywhere! Shouldn't be a huge deal though, its a glass tank and easy to scrape.

It makes the tank pretty who wants to see plain white rock right. And dont worry about the tank just keep the front clean let the rest go.

PEOPLE WILL SPEND 20 BUCKS FOR PURPLE UP TO SPEED (sorry!!!!) up the growth. i have a 330g and the entire back is encrusted. it is hard to keep off the front and sides but i clean it a bunch. the rock is green purple red some bits of orange and it looks so great. you should be happy with it.

I've been in this hobby for a little over 5 years, and have never had a problem with coraline algae. I have always wanted my rock covered with it, but no luck. I have two urchins, so that is the big reason I can't keep it in my tank. If you don't want it on the glass or in your tank, throw in a couple urchins and it will be gone in no time.

No, I've never used Purple Up or any other type of additives that I could not test for. I have learned much reading these forums for the past year and no doubt have much more to learn but I believe the one top rule in this hobby or industry is " don't add anything in your tanks you can not test for. I do change out 10% of the water every week.

That's a very good rule to live by! Having good coraline growth is a sign of good water quality, so don't do anything different. Unless it's a very nice store, I wouldn't use the tanks at an LFS as a gauge for anything. Many of the coral tanks in stores around here are poorly maintained.

I was at a zoo - I think it was the Pittsburgh Zoo in PA and saw a tank with a ton of coralline. It was all over - growing out from the walls of the tank on top of itself, making structures like encrusting monti's or something. It was quite impressive.

From looking at my rocks I would say it defiantly reduces any flow through the rock as a water filtering method. All they tiny holes that were in them are now stopped up with coralline............
The other gripe is every day I need to scarp it off of the front glass, I gave, like most do long ago on the back......... I am down to ever other week doing the side for at least 30 minutes to keep it off.......... At least it comes in pretty colors!!!.Warren
