Is there such a thing as too much light on a tank? I have 2x150 HQI MH and 2x65 Actinic PC for a total of 430 watts too much for a 38 gallon that is roughly 36longx12widex18high

Don't know if this is really an answer but I have 2x150 mh HQI on my 20 gal. The only real problem I have is temp.

how bad is your temperature rise with the lights on and drop with the lights off?
Do you have fans in that fixture?

There are fans in the fixture but they are just to cool the fixture. I have moved them a little higher but I still get about a 4 deg. swing. So i'm going to get some fans to point at the water.

What do you have in there lionfish? It doesnt look like any corals. Id say that 300w of MH on a 20g tank that is probably 18" high at most is a little much for alot of corals.
You may be getting close to too much for some corals xrobbx but should be fine except for low light corals.

a lot of the softies wont like it much, but if you go sps, clams, etc... you would be golden and could keep anything anywhere.

What MH bulbs you choose is also going to effect what type of corals you will be able to keep. Many 20K bulbs have half as much PAR as some 10K's. I agree that some softies and lps will not be happy. Zoanthids will do fine under high lighting.

obviously sun corals and carnations wont do well, most likely xenia, shrooms, kenya trees, cabbage.
