I like Hammett, I've seen them with him 4 times. Kirk gets a lot of attention, but James Hetfield always wrote all his rhythm parts. A wise musician once said Kirk Hammett would be the fastest guitar playing dishwasher if not for James Hetfield.

And yes Marty Friedman, Megadeath's other guitarist is great too, but they split solos for the most part, but Dave wrote almost everything.
lol, I guess you and me were posting the same post at the same time. I agree 100%

I see Hammett several times on this list and everywhere else on all these magazine lists, etc. and he's great. but imo, James Hetfield is the best guitarist in Metallica. in fact, I'd would venture to say Hetfield is probably the best rhythm guitarist ever. he definitely started a whole new approach to guitar and rhythm playing with the rapid downstroking (instead of the down-up-down-up that just about every "technical guitarist" thinks you have to play with) and the massive palm muting that has pounded out some of the best riffs ever. and if you've ever watched any of those "making of" videos, Hetfield pretty much has to sit in the studio and teach Hammett everything to play. that's what separates Hammett from boring guitarists like Malmsteen.......Hammett has an extremely great rhythm guitarist teaching him what to play.
Ditto

Hetfield is one of or if not the best rhythm guitarist out there. He wrote a lot of solos for Hammett. He is like Mark Morton from lamb of god.Mark writes most of the solos and Willie performs them. But Kirk executes and performs them brilliantly.I also love Hetfields Japanese knock off of a flying v.lol.He still plays it live.

That's a tough call to make. I can't believe people mentioned Jack White. The kid plays like a baby with broken fingers.
If we are talking the metal genre I would go with Marty Friedman as the best.

I have a relatively unheard of gutiar player named Gary Hoey. Put it to you this way he can play the Star Spangled Banner on his and you can UNDERSTAND IT as if he was singing the words. He did a Chirsmas song collection a few years ago and it was a huge hit sort of went double Platnum and yet people have not heard of him.

In fact, I just hit Youtube to give a second chance and even heard a clip called "Jack Whites Amazing Guitar Playing"
It was still horrid.
Everyone of course is entitled to there own opinions. I like many of the metal gods as they are classically trained. My all time favorite from the rock scene is Mike Einziger from Incubus.
To name a few general favorites:
SRV - he made the guitar have a voice of its own.
Barney Kessel - Jazz legend. recently deceased.
Pat Martino - JAzz virtuoso, had amnesia, had to totally relearn to play and is a bad mamba jamba.
Tom Morello - innovative - talented beyond rock genre
Oooooh.. Joe Pass too
Then there is Allen Holdsworth. He is a sicko!!!
