Do you have a rotary tool (dremmel)? You want to cut at the branch as low as possible where I have the red line in the pic below.

JUst cut the hard skeleton between the heads. Try and not cut the tissue.

I just used some side cutters or a pair of dykes. Don't cut the tissue -- just the hard skeleton, which really isn't all that hard... it crushes pretty easy.
