The easiest thing i can think of is just to get a micromesh bag, take out the filter and put in the bag and fill it up??
I did a search and didn't see any one retrofitting anything or for that matter why you would want to..

cause i've read alot about how those filter cartridges trap waste and cause nitrates and all they are good for is water circulation, i read this whole big thing about it and now i can't find it.

First off if in the 22,000 messages and if it's only been posted once..it's probably not too true.
I have read tons of things about bio wheels being nitrate factories, blah blah, sand is nitrate foctories, fish are, Hell Empty your tank! IT's ALL NITRATE FACTORIES!
Get rid of your nitrate and what you get? Nitrite! that is BAD.
If you have a lot of nitrate. Usually that means you had a lot of nitrite! Which means you have a lot of amonia to convert.
Ultimately you want to cure the source which is amonia..
The best way to do this is keep your filter clean.
Keep your filter the way it is, Add some carbon to the media basket.
Alternate cleaning filters once a week.
You'll be fine...If you keep up your nitrates, think "I have to reduce amonia" in the back of your head.
