Toxicity of Perm Markers

Hi:
I'm setting up my new RO/DI filter, and want to be able to mark water levels (in gallons) on the inside of my final container.
Does anyone know if permanent markers (Sharpie brand) are toxic?
If not, does anyone have any other ideas on how to mark levels inside an opaque container?
My other thought is Duct Tape.

i would NOT risk using permanent marker on n e thing my tank water comes in conatct with JMO

Im not sure, but I would not trust either or think it would not last long befor rubbing off or whatever..Not sure what the container is made of like plastic or glass but you may be able to just scratch some lines in it or maybe make some kind of safe dip stick with notches or simular to read...

All the Sharpies and El Marko's I have here say NON-TOXIC I colored a piece of pvc pipe for a freshwater setup with a black magic marker years ago and its still in use in the tank, granted its not as black but its still there and it never hurt a thing. I doubt the use of a sharpie is going to be hazardous in any way. Oh, I also have the insid eof my resivoir that I mix given amounts of saltwater up in, marked off with a Sharpie in 1 gal increments. Faded a bit but still useable, and I have never had any issues with strange crap happeing due to use of a Sharpie as far as I can tell. It certainly ocul dnot be anay owrse than spray painting pvc pipes etc as is typically done., Once dry and cured its usually inert, even if its not marked as non toxic.

Unless you are using a black container, you can usually see the water level inside of a rubbermaid from the outside. I marked the outside of the gray one that I am using at 5, 10 and 15 gallon increments and can see the water line through the plastic.

Thanks for the input everybody. The answer to why mark the inside is that it is a huge trash can (purchased new) and it is solid green.

I dont think Perm mark (sharpie) will hurt anything that is what all of the LFS use to mark the price on the bag and you float the bags ..... I have not had any problems allthough i was kind of sketched at first but havent had any problems

Oh. I get it. I have a 55 gal drum that I mix salt in, and havent found a way to mark it yet. I thought I would have to guesstimate the water level from inside to the outside, or use a ruler...
