Transporting fish long distances

Okay, I understand that fish are shipped from this site, but how long could a fish be transported by the means available to us, in a car? I wonder about visiting a lfs in Kansas City or Okla. City, maybe even Dallas.

I think it could be done.Just be sure that when you buy the fish you tell them you are traveling a long distance,and they should put the fish in a larger bag with lots of fresh o2 in it.Not too large of a bag though,you dont want them shloshing around.You should also bring along a cooler to put them in.This will keep the temp stable,and they feel more comfortable in the dark.Bring along something to pack around the bags,like newspaper,or towels so the bage wont roll around in the cooler. I have transported fish from Tn. to southeast Tx. in a styrofom cooler filled with ro water. It had a lid to keep it dark and fake plants to give them some hiding places. I also used a 12v to 120v convertor to run a air pump and heater. Put stress coat and stresszyme in their water. Drove 11hrs. with no problems and no deaths. Never even had to open the box it worked great. Good luck and be prepared.

Yep, they can easily survive hours in a bag. Just use a cooler as Salty said and I usually take a towel to put around the bg in the cooler to keep the bag from bouncing around.

Hey its nice to see somebody else from Kansas.Why would you want to go to any of those places for fish when you could go to Aquarium in old town,right there in Wichita.I have made the drive from Garden City to Wichita many times to get fish,its about a 3 hour drive.They bag it several times (they being Aquarium in old town)and then I put it in ice chest.Never had a problem this way.I will never buy a fish from no one other than them.Every fish I have purchased from them is still alive and doing great.I cant say that for the fish that I got at other places they havnt been as lucky.

just wondering if anyone has transported fish on an airplane, and what would that involve. i may need to move across the pacific soon and would hate to have to leave my pets behind.

Two weeks ago, i moved all my fish from my apt& school in WV to my summer job in Western MD. i had a Tomato Clown, a royal Gramma & a Saddleback clown in my home tank. i removed them, put them in water straight from my tank, & a cooler at noon. They sat in my car all afternoon while i cleaned up my classroom & got the rest of my fish from my classroom. By the time i arived up at their "summer home" it was after 8 p.m. I was pleasantly surprised to see that all 3 of the fish that had sweltered in my car all day had survived w/ nary a glitch. The only problem i had ws that my saddleback hid in the corner for about 3-4 days. But pack like the previous post, w/ Plenty of O2 & in a cooler. As for travel by plane, i'm sure that's possible also, since that's how they're shipped across the world. There's probably no need to worry about their ears popping.

i am planning to move from austin, tx. to savannah, ga. in july. i sold all by tanks but my 60 gallon corner and 55 long. i will keep all live rock and fish in 3 styrofoam coolers with battery operated pumps....
around 5.00 a pump. they will run for 48 hours on one set of batteries. i will NOT lose one fish.... guaranteed........

ive had no problems transporting fish and inverts from OKC and Dallas to Tulsa, just tell them where your going with it and theyll give you an insulated box for your livestock.
BTW, i was in wichita last weekend, youve go a really nice store out there, i forget what it was called, but I loved feeeding the piranahs (sp???)
