Trash can

I mix my water in a Rubbermaid trash can (exclusive use). Over time, despite rinsing before and after use, the inside of the can has been crusted with salt deposits.
Rather than deal with the problem, would it be safe to line the can with a plastic trash bag, mix the water, then just throw the bag away? Trash bags cost about a quarter. Well worth it, if it's still safe for the fish.

i really dont see why its such a big deal, but cant u just use a heavy duty sponge and scrape it off if u dont want it that bad?

I always use the same bucket to keep my water in and its a big trash can and i never rinse it out or anything but i dont really notice a bunch of salt on the sides of it either... so idk

It's a brown trash can, so it's obvious. I also get white flakes floating on top and settling on bottom when mixing the water. Don't know if it's salt, dirt, or whatever, but the trash bag idea sounds like a good solution.

Sounds like you might not be mixing well. Do you have power heads in the can to keep the water moving until you are ready to use it?

also do u have a cover u place over it? i have this pump with a hose on it that i put in mine while i add the salt, and i mix it around until i see no more salt, i do this the day im going to be doing the water change too, it makes it very easy to add the water back into the tank without any lifting =) and i used to have that stuff float around until i got a cover so maybe its just dust?

I don't use a cover, so maybe it is dust. I mix with a powerhead for 2-3 days, so I'm sure the salt is thoroughly mixed.

i wouldnt use trash bags alot of them are treated with a disenfectant and fragrance that can transfer into the tank.

All trash bag are sprayed with insecticide so I dont that trash are the better choice. I also use a trash can and get the same thing I dont know what it is but I just scrape what I can off and dont worry about the rest.

...and I think some sort of oily stuff that lets them separate. I looked at a big box and they weren't food safe, and that means not fish-safe to me. I don't think my crud build up is anything to worry about. I've just scraped it off ( and let it re-dissolve); when it gets heavy for years. I'm just guessing that the surface of our plastic containers is more susceptible to build-up than glass.

You can run a RO/vinegar mix in your trashcan for two or three days, will help eliminate the buildup, and also clean your mixing powerheads out as well
