Hi, I don't really know for sure, but I always just made sure it was upright and burried the base a little in the sand. I love sponges for the color they add. Congrats on the new addition. Good luck, ~Ali

I have it my tank now but can't decide were exactly to put it. Does anybody have any pics of them in their tank so I can get an idea

Hi, sorry no pix. Mine croaked a few months back. I had had it for like 2 years. It was just a red/orange tree sponge. The previous person is right about the air too, same as gorgonians, they can't be exposed to air. So no air stones near it, or protein skimmer outflow's near it either. Mine did best near the center of the tank with lots of flow, and in the highest lighting. Mine got green slime algae on it rarely thanks to the high flow. I've heard that's the downfall of a lot of sponges is algaes that take over them. Also if you have any nudibranches, some love them. I had a nudi that ate part of my sponge, so I had to get rid of the nudi. Good luck, ali:happyfish

I had a red tree sponge beside the live rock formations sticking up out of the sand. I also had an orange one in front of the rock. I had them until my sump overflowed and the water level in the tank went so far down that the sponges touched air...it was a goner within 2 months.
I'm going to add another as soon as my LFS gets another one. Here is a picture of where I had it a few months back (it's strange to look at this picture then look at my recent "6 pack" posts and see where my reef has gone!!!):
