Is that normal ? and is that a good thing or a bad thing ? He comes to the glass and tries to smash it and make a snapping sound.

All of my triggers make the grunting sounds and the snapping sound comes when they are feeding. My crosshatch has the loudest. It sounds like bones cracking when his jaws meet. It is totally normal.

To answer your first question . It is very common for triggers to grunt and make a popping sound . Its just one of their ways of comunicating .
To answer your second question . Yes that is a lot of fish to have in a tank .

How long have these fish been housed together? Triggers are known to snap all of a sudden and start killing off fish for what appears to be no reason. Clowns, queens, and undys are especially known for this so I have a feeling those living arrangements will not work out for long. If you can keep all of those fish in such tight quarters without any fighting over territory then I would say you are one in a million. Also, 50 triggers will not work in a 500 gallon tank, the bioload alone would certainly mean an early death.

I'm very confused here being new so excuse me if i'm off but 50 fish in a 500 gallon tank that grow to be almost 2.5 feet ? SLack are you exaggerating ? everyone seems to think 50 triggerfish in a 500 is very unconventional to put it mildly. I don't wana lash at you or anything i'm not like that but I'm trying to learn the right husbandry for fish and you have 11 triggerfish and eels which I read should not be with triggerfish (I could be wrong ) in a tank now..I have 8 fish in my 125 all less than 3 inches. Please explain how you control the water levels what kind of filtteration and skimmer etc.. are you doing ?

Point blank he does not care if his fish die or not , He has made it very clear tthat its survival of the fit in his tank. The queen trigger he is adding should allone be in a tank in the 500 gallon size ALONE . When it gets full grown it will destroy anything housed with it . Slackjaw has no real clue about triggers true size nature and requierments to live long healthy happy lives .

slackjawed, after I read your first post of triggers in your tank I just said to myself here is a classic example of someone not doing research before they buy a certain fish. Then after reading your last post where you just say your going to flush the eel because he is being picked on made me realize it wouldn't matter if you did the research or not. You would have no care in the world what it said because you are going to do what you want to do. When you talk about putting 50 triggers in a 500 gallon tank just reaffirms that you have no clue on what you are doing!
If you seriously don't think that you are not going to have a problem down the road you are sadly mistaken.

Espkh - please do not use Slackjaw's tank as a good example of how to care for fish. He does not care for his fish and has said it many many times prior that when they get sick or they dont fight back they will be flushed or stuffed.
I personally found out what happens when a trigger doesnt want another trigger in the tank. It is like watching a pitbull attack a piece of raw meat. It is terrifying.
He says that he has 15 triggers in a 180g. Each of them will be a minimum of 12" and most will grow to 15-18".
That does not include his 6 eels and a panther grouper.

Panther groupers should be left in the sea the grow very large and you would need a 500 gal tank just f6r that fish. (imho)

I don't want to drift off subject..... But, I can't stand when people use the "pit bull attacking something like a raw piece of meat" statement. I was raised with them never have had this prob. I had wiener dogs that were more vicious than any pit I ever had. The slack guy makes me sick. Sorry that is just cruel, he deserves to keep NO animal...

Hey Jennifer...I fully agree with your statement about the pit bulls. My friends have had them for years and I love them to death. They are some of the best looking dogs on the planet. BUT if you dont train them correctly they can quickly become killers. This is similar to triggers.
Slackjaw has been removed from this site as he was a complete idiot. He was the quinticential dumb-A$$ aquarist that would own pitbulls that fight. He cares about one thing...his pleasure. He has no concern for anything outside of his small little world.

Fortunately, triggers make all sorts of noises. They'll spit too.
