Trouble in Paradise

I just got my CUC on Wednesday (the "Big Boy" package from this site), I have fed and provided extra shells but the hermits are eating the snails! They are going right to town...It's disgusting. WHY? What can I do?
Thanks,
Kelly

How did you acclimate the snails? A temp only acclimate could have shocked their systems, and they could have been dying and the hermits were just finishing them off.
If not and it's an all out slaughter my only suggestion is maybe remove some of the more aggressive ones. I'm new too, somebody with better advice should come along soon.

I had the same problems. Chances are you didn't acclimate your snails long enough. I have found that if you take a few hours to acclimate them, then they will immediately start climbing once you put them in. If you just throw them in there then they will stay on the bottom and become easy prey for the crabs. I would take the snails out and find some way to quarantine them until they perk up.
I don't order crabs anymore. I've found that they don't do much except kill snails.

Well I probably didn't acclimate them as long as I should have, however--the snails came in 2 bags of fifty, my nephew had half at one end and I had the other half at the other end, HIS snails I think are fine. MY snails may just be the next meal.

It's probable. My first snails I temp acclimated and lost a few the first week or so. I first thougt it was "When hermits attack" but since realized it was my own fault. Luckily, snails are about the cheapest thing you can get in this hobby.
I really don't think people need as many hermits as they get, though they are great if something dies where you can't see it. I just find snails more useful for "cleaning". Hermits like to "clean with extreme prejudice".

These guys are absolutely right on the accimilation.
Over the years I've had the zebra hermits being more aggressive. One got a taste for my snails that had been in there forever and then I watched him take out my healthy clam under some rock work. Had plenty of shells. Some snails were even smaller than him.
He is now in prison by himself in my fuge.
