What is a decent water heater for my 90gallon? I am having trouble keeping the temp. above 77degrees... Please help...

Yea, 200 watt... I think it's cheap, dont remember how much I paid... Or are water heaters just water heaters?

Get the titanium ones so that they won't break.
Also, you can get more than one. Thet way if one fails you'll have a backup and more time to catch it.

Nothing wrong with pyrex tube heaters.....but there is a vast difference in what the pyrex tubes or titanium tubes hold inside and whats reliable. I have had nothing but pyrex tubed heaters up until a few moths ago, whenI finally bought a stealth heater, which is a hi temp platic coating on a metal tube, and its not really all that impressive.....lacks a visible indicator light which I like. IMHO EBO Jagger make the best most accurate and reliable heaters......right now at a lot of online sources you can get some super deals on EBO Jaggers as Eheim (sp?) bought out the company and are now marketing them as Eheim Jagger heaters etc.....same heater different name......
The EBO (Eheim) Jagger line of heaters are guaranteed to be accurate within 1/2 deg tolerance where the others are rated at like 2 degrees........Seems european made items still have a great deal of quality built into them as compared to what stuff made in the USA or imported form the orient has. Tetra brand heats are about as unreliable as you can get. I have had numerous failures with Tetra brands over the years......Best one I have ever had is a Penn Plax of over 30 years age which works like a champ, unfortunately its a hob type..

I've got two ProHeat II titanium heaters and absolutely love them! Price wise they're really comparible to hob submersible glass heaters of the same wattage, won't break like glass, and are digitally controlled so all you have to do is set the temp and let em do their job (no adjusting a little knob till you get it just so). But just like chipmaker said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the glass ones either! I just like the little conveniences of mine.

IMO.. I wouldn't go cheap on water heaters. If you get a good one the temp will stay accurate.

i was told 4 watts per gallon, so you should really have 360 watts in your tank... i have a 250 in my 55 gallon, and have never had a problem. IMO, you should add another 200 watt heater to the opposite side of the tank.

I have my heater in my sump tank below, could that be the reason why it isn't doing the job?

Putting it in the sump vs. in the main tank shouldn't affect the temp one way or the other that I know of.

Hmmm I won't say that's wrong, maybe my info is outdated, but I've always heard 3 watts/gallon minimum. 4 watts per gallon shouldn't hurt a darn thing though! I'd think that'd just mean that the heaters wouldn't have to work as hard to maintian the proper temps.

dont know if u fixed you little problem yet but i love titanium heaters.. i will never buy glass agin.. that are just plag n dial in temp... imo won bro pro II are the best.. thet are super accurate .. mine have a heater bar and a separate sensore.. that way.. you can put the sensore far away from the heating element itself so you can get a tru and accurate reading.. and as far as watt??? well i have a 155 and i only have 1 300watt won bro heater.. and my tank stay at 79 deg... ad my tank sit right in front of a big window 6' away from the main door.... ... my house is in jersy.. so yes it get cold...
ther is nothing wrong with glass heaters.. but i just like the fact that my heater cant break... ( i broke 2 glass heaters during a water change.. water lvlin tank drop and the heater coil inside the glass was not submerged.. and CRACK they went.. is sucks picking upglass in a tank.. they are really hard to see.. and when it broke.. it let a lot of electric in my tank.. and yes!!salt water do give the electric a extra UMPHH ..)

What's your ambient temp. I have a 90 gallon and a 100W cheapo heater. My tank is always at 80F. Without the heater, my tank runs at 77F w/o lights. My ambient temp is 75F.

Same for me lepete. I have a mucho cheapo 100w in my 90 gallon, have had it for awhile, and I just keep it in my wet/dry, underneath the tank. So it heats the water before it goes in the tank. and the gallon amount underneath is probably only 10 gallons or so. It consistantly stays at 80 degrees all the time.

My tank is only 37gal, and I had an incident last week that I was just lucky to catch. When I checked out the temp it was OVER 86 degrees. Lucky for me, none of my critters was adversely affected.
I went to the LFS this past weekend with my hb, and we were trying to figure out which heater to get...we decided on the higher priced one with the lifetime warranty. It also has a temp gauge that is easy to read and set. So far, so good.

I have a 90 gal w/ 2 100 watt heaters in the sump. With the pump for the protein skimmer and the return pump heating the tank 200 watts works for me. I would always have 2 in case one sticks or breaks. I have glass heaters and the temp stays between 79 and 80. If I had them in my tank instead of sump I would go w/titanium. Hope that helps.

Well right know I have a 200watt glass in there that has been laying around and I had to put it in recently because my old glass heater broke. The heater in there now is good enough for 60g and have it cranked on high. I have a digital temp gauge that gives me some accurate readings (i hope). It has been reading 77degrees at night and 78 with lights on during the day. room temp stays at around 69-71 degrees, live in upstate NY so it's cold....(19 degrees right know outside)
