found that during the year that i did quit i excersised a ton (paddled my surfboard 1-2 miles a day) made me think every time i went to light up that i would feel it tomorrow. since moving to colorado and all the microbrews and from time to time green leafy stuff, smoking cigs has come back which i kick myself every time i but a new pack. ok, try excersise.

7 years steady, didn't use any patch or anything but it took me about 2 years of decreasing, decreasing, decreasing. I thought I'd quit out of college, that didn't happen..excuses etc.. It took a long time but finally I don't even think about it unless I'm really around it. -not much help, I know.
Go for a run, it helped me realize.

I used the patch. AND quit when I didn't want too. (Hubby's a respiratory therapist)
I needed the patch for my physical side affects like mood swings and irratibility.
But You have to think like a non-smoker... Driving to work in the morn, you CAN'T think things like "Man, sure wish I had a cigarette." Cause I don't think you could ever quit while dwelling on it. Try to THINK what a non-smoker would think...things like "man, that guy shouldn't be on the road." Or, I love this song." Or something besides the smokes.
And when you get into a smoking crowd, don't fight it, just tell yourself that you're smoking...via osmosis!! Helped me alot!!
GOOD LUCK though!!!:cheer:

cold turkey, baby. Some things that helped:
-Don't change your other habits. If you smoke in the car, roll your window down a crack for 5 minutes or so occasionally. Take a "smoke break" every once in a while at work. Go outside for 5 or 10 minutes like you normally would.
-Exercise. It's great for you and it helps get rid of alot of the nervous negative energy.
-lots of water
-lots of sleep
Lots of gum
-cloves, the kind they put in ham. Chew em once in awhile. It helped me.
Good luck

the patch worked great for me . . . had to do it twice though.
Two years and counting . . . . .
P.S. When the cravings get real bad . . . try sticking a toothpick in your mouth . . . it helps the physical cravings big time.

I've quit X2 once for 6 years and then a stupid attack led to a year of smoking
( to myself) ive quit again for another 2 years and have no desires left here is what worked for me I told everyone I new (yep everyone)that as of the date if they saw me even think about it to distract me...take me for a swim make me do patient care (at work) stick my hands into my tanks and start re aranging things play walking balie with the dog (leash in one hand ballie in the other doing dirty things like gardening or tank maintenence (who wants fishie excrament in their mouth or cow dung wintoi greens for the oral fixation and suck it hard like inhaling a cig if you need to (a straw) that didn't come out well and most imporatnt picture your self not stinking like a filthy poison weed oh did you know that there is over a hundred poisons in each one ? DO you love yuor self enough not to want for a dose of rat poison, arsenic strictnine amonia? the list goes on oh and remember you have a big commitment to your critters so you need to live to do it !!!
ok now I'll just get off my high horse and say good luck listen I smoked 4 packs a day I walkewd from a vent unit and sucked down 3 in 15 minutes went in and shoved tubes down throats so the people could breathe a little longer parilized in a bed with no lives from cig's (yuck no wonder I'm short) and I the female with no will power can do it so can you !!!!!
the physical cravings are about 72 hours then it is habbit to break (the physical drug is gone) ...means nothing have the support system and don't give up on yourself even if you goof up once or twice along the way did you ever win at any thing you gave up on H*ll no!!
GOD's speed to you and remember if I did it so can you wow sorry for the long winded opinion (I'm a nurse used to dishing out the lectures part of my life again god's speed and good luck shawna

i quit 2 weeks ago. cold turkey. the trick is drinking lots of water and eating lots of sunflower seeds. :D i've tried before using nicorette and the patch, but for me it's no good because i am an addict. using the drug in a form other than a cigarette just makes me that much closer to having a cig if i'm out of gum or patches. cold turkey is the way to go, just stop, and ride it out. exercise helps lots too.

the key is to go with nicoderm, not the other ones. nicoderm, does not substitute but weens you slowly. and you should never run out of patches, when i used them.... i bought one week ahead(once i had 7 left, i bought a new box until i finished the complete program.
i hope you make it this time.
as to how to do it. well there is a secret that one needs to know and not one of the ex-smokers here can argue. i quit for 2 yrs and 11 months and restarted because i forgot that one ingredoient.
no matter what you do, or how you do it..... cold turkey- patch - gum - hypnotism - or whatever. YOU MUST CONVINCE YOURSELF, first. once that is done, and you KEEP convincing yourself. IF you do that, any program will work. BUT you must keep convincing yourself and temind yourself that you are doing it, otherwise you will relapse. 2 days, 1 yr, 3yrs later you must stilll convince yourself, because it is never over.... only easier.

it's incredible how much aof a hold a cigarette may have on a person, i was at work tongiht, and somone came in and said they'd liek a sea tin smoking, we had no seats (half hte bar room was taken over by a chef for his pasta night) ... so they left!

yeah i tried the patch but it was the target brand. that was a long time ago though :D the gum was nicorette brand, the navy doc's gave it to me.
i second what fshhub says. you have to want to do it and remind yourself of why you are quitting when you feel like you really want to smoke one. for me that is when i am drinking, especially if i'm out with friends who smoke.
the hardest part of quitting for me is talking myself out of it after i've rationalized having just one :D

I can help you quit smoking, you are on the patch? If you smoke while wearing a patch or within 2 hours of taking it off, you are likely to get a nicotine overdose and die. I'm a smoker too, trying to quit, its so tough.

What worked for my wife was her getting pregnant. The day she found out whe was pregnant she quit. My son is 11 yrs old now.
It was rough for her for about a week or two but she quit and hasn't started back. She was smoking over 2 packs a day at that time.
One thing she said that was a big help was that i didn't smoke. I never have. Another beneficial thing is having support from others.
Now i don't condone getting pregnant just to stop smoking but it worked for her

Good luck,
Chris

nicky1.8t,
She was married before and tried to quit when she was pregnant with her 1st child.
Her "now" ex smoked as well and wouldn't help or support in her trying to stop smoking. He kept on smoking right in front of her which made it impossible for her to quit.
As i stated before support is beneficial and with me not smoking ( never have ) it helped her as well. We now have a smoke free home for the last approximately 12 years.
Her 1st daughter has a slight breathing problem today and when she is at his home and she has an attack or the smoke is getting to her, she according to him has to leave the room if it's too much for her. He said he will never quit because he likes smoking too much.
Our rule in our home is if you want to smoke that's fine but it will be outside and if we are at your home and you want to smoke its ok. If it gets to us we go outside. I don't try to push my views on anyone as i wouldn't want them to push their's on us.
Chris
