Tsunami

How do you all feel on it?
there is going to be a great affect on the reefs in that area but i would have to say thats the reefs are not the main worry, it is terrible what happened, they had pictures of the divers and snorkelers, some were found 3-4 miles inland stuck in trees, and the clips of the children getting sucked out to sea trying to drag their parents in, moves me to tears.
34 foot tall wave, going 360 some miles an hour, crashing into humans and buildings, that’s like running into a cement wall with a rocket on your back. fall out of a plane and hit water you will split in 2, I cant imagine what happened to the people. many just disintegrated from the blast.
Not to mention the diseases from the rotting corpses of animals and humans laying in the street
truely terrible, more so then the WTC IMO, mind you if it where to happen here it wouldnt have been a big deal because of out technology, money, and shelters.
just like the hurricanes that where happening down in florida, if we were as poor as india and those other islands out death rate would have been in the thousands, tens iof thousands.
My heart gos out to them all

I was reading about that too. It is a very terrible thing, the death toll is so high, i can't imagine. With technology we would have had a warning about something like that, i doubt if those people had any warning or anything. The part about the children kills me too. Very sad.

I heard that since tsunamis (sp) are so rare in that part of the world, the early warning system doesn't apply to them. I bet it will now. A real shame. We know that the last warning signal nature gives of approaching tidal waves, is the ocean water getting sucked out for hundreds of yards. Instead of fleeing these people stood there in awe of what they were seeing. They never had a chance.

true there are tsunamis in japan and around there, but in india they have no word for tsunami, and they dont have the discover channel or anythign so they dont even know what one is, only the rich peopl would know.

Thats very ignorant for you to think that people dont know what tsunamis/tidal waves are in india. Just cuz they're porr doesnt mean that they dont know about things like that. They live so close to Japan they are bound to hear about stuff like that in either the news or through common gossip. They just werent expecting it. And this couldnt have been warned because earthquakes of that magnitude dont usually happen over there, and even if they do in the indian ocean, they never occur with a tsunami to boot. In Japan it happens becuz the plates are mvojng alot. This could be the beginning of a new continental movement. The plates that caused the HImalayas, they could be moving again, and that monster quake was just the introduction. But what would be worse: the himalayas crashing down, or the wave? Just speculation. May all the people and the families that were affected come to peace...

I agree with Liontamer. Just becuase their economic status isnt that great, doesnt mean theyre stupid by any means.
They just came out and said that the death toll is at 120,000 and the final death toll may never be known.
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone over there.

Matt watch CNN, they even said they have no word for Tsunami, and more then 75% of the county never knew what one was. yeah they had no warning, and oyu can blame them for not knowing, but the tourists should ahve known, on CNN they are showing a tape of a guy taping the water etract 500+ yards, and stay there for minute, then the waving comeing at him, and they didnt move, they just sat there.... they should have known that when the water retracts it will coem back, and 10X mroe fierce.

My wife shares an office with someone from Sri Lanka. His family still lives there. Fortunately they are OK, but we were worried there for awhile. His father is trying to organize relief efforts and is having some success and some tough going as well. Truly a horrible thing to have happen.

There was a fascinating article in the Wall Street Journal today which said that the extensive coral reefs surrounding the Maldives actually saved them from total devastation, apparently absorbing the force of the tsunami underwater instead of on the land. So far, the reefs do not appear to be damaged.
They contrasted the pristine conditions of the Maldives reefs with those closer to Thailand and Indonesia, where economic development has killed the reefs.
If you have a chance to read the article, I'm sure you'd find it interesting. (I wish I could link, but I'm not sure how)

Well, I can't get to it on the web without a paid web subscription. (I get a paper copy at work)

hmmm maybe the rotting bodies will be sucked up into some of those whirlpools and go into the deeper ocean arean and get eaten by sharks
