I know this sounds crazy but do turbo snails kill hermits? This morning i found a dead hermit and i found it's shell...and a snail seems to be living very happily in it. I found the same thing a few days ago. Anyone have any ideas?

That is probably the case but why would a snail want to leave its own shell?

I don't think the snail would leave its own shell. I know somewhere in my tank there's a stinkin little crab that's brown with very red eyes...rock crab????? anyway, i'm not adding any fish til i can get it out of there...i was only told it would kill fish. i wonder if it killed my hermits??? anyone know about this evil little crab?

rmd810, what is your calcium level and pH? The reason I ask is that if there is not enough calcium (or if the pH is out of whack), the snail will not be able to grow out its shell, and will therefore look for another available shell as the snail's body grows.
I still don't think the snail actually killed the crab though.

NO!
Snails cannot leave their shells without dying. They are physically attached to their shells (like a turtle). They grow their own shells, so they always fit in them.
A turbo snail is not capable of killing hermits. They can however eat off the dead body.

i definitely think that your turbo did NOT kill your crab, they are great for clean up, but not carnivorous or battle ready at all

I was pretty sure the snails weren't killing the hermits but figured i better check with everyone else. Is that true that a snail can't leave it's shell without dying? Because i've had this pretty big snail crawling around looking as happy as can be and it looked like it was just growing a new shell or something. i could be wrong....but it really looked like it was growing a new one.

since snails are attached to the shells, it is kinda impossible for them to leave it. If you have ever eaten a conch, you know you have to cut a notchinto the shell to cut the little holder inside the shell. also how would a snail outgrow it's shell?

I do not think the snail ate the hermit. They are not really carnivorous. They are basically just a cleaner, so it was probably eating the remains of the crab.
