My vote would be to always have a refugium of some sort if you have the space. Ideally if you can have a sump with your protein skimmer in there, and then a refugium as well that would be the way to go. Personally, I took a 30g searclear tank and converted that into a sump/refugium. I put a 4 inch sand bed and have it filled as far as it will go with LR. I do not use a skimmer myself as I believe they take out the beneficial phytoplankton that the corals use for a food source. I am in the minority with this view. (If going this route you do have to take extra special notice of how much livestock you have in the tank. Otherwise you get too much ammonia which will ultimately fuel unwanted algae growth. That was probably more than you wanted to know but there it is. LOL)
