I have a 38g FOWLR looking to convert to reef. Right now my turnover rate is 19x. Is this sufficient for a reef or do i need more. Whats the general rule of thumb for turnover in a reef tank.

i would say ur fine for all corals except sps they would need a lil more flow like 25-30x's but ur good for everything else imo

Just so that I clarify what your saying if you have a 100 gal tank and you turn over 19x thats a pump that puts out 1900 Gallon Per Hour GPH?

yup the total amount of water being pushed around in your tank from pumps returns closed loops and such divided by ur tanks gallons

it's depend where you run this pump and dircet what?
if you run 1900 gph pump in small sump you will get over heat and a very big noise in the pipe. if you have regular 2 over flow so it's better to run 1200gph pump and you will have less heat and not a big noise thru the pipe.
you can add outside close loop to get more circulation or to use 2 strong ph that will direct all the detritus that seat in your tank and skimmate strong.
